Find your MAC address

Reading time: 4 minutes

Are you having a tough time connecting your Sound Capsule to a restricted Wi-Fi network? Some restricted networks may allow for you to access the network by adding your Sound Capsule's MAC address. This article guides you in how to find your Sound Capsule's MAC address.

What's a MAC address?

To avoid confusion, a MAC address has nothing to do with the brand name Macbook as known by Apple.

A MAC address is akin to a finger print, a unique digital ID, given to network devices, wether that's your computer, smartphone, or, in this case, your Sound Capsule. The term "MAC" is short for "Media Access Control" address.

For security reasons, some workplaces have restrictions to who and what can connect to their Wi-Fi network. However, by registering your Sound Capsule's MAC address, you could get the green light to join such networks.

Understanding the MAC Address

If we were to compare, a MAC address is akin to a device's digital fingerprint. No two devices share the same MAC address. It consists of a sequence of numbers and letters, usually separated by colons or dashes.

This unique MAC address serves a key purpose: it helps network systems like routers and switches recognize your device and send data its way. And, while an IP address might vary based on where you connect, a MAC address sticks with your device, consistent and unchanged, as it's linked directly to the device's hardware.

How does it work?

The MAC address helps identify and distinguish one device from another on a network. It is used by routers and switches to direct data to the correct device within a local network. Unlike IP addresses, which can change or be assigned dynamically, the MAC address remains constant and is associated with the hardware of the device.
